A LETTER FROM THE CREATOR

The world is a beautiful place full of diversity and wonder. When we escape our bubbles of comfort and immerse ourselves in the unfamiliar, we discover inspiring individuals, vibrant histories, and unique ways of life that challenge our perspectives. Repeated exposure to these experiences empowers our ability to think creatively, affords us a deeper understanding of the world, and connects us to our humanity.

As a person, I've fallen in love with the pursuit of these collisions—with learning, exploring the world, and immersing myself in the stories of other places and people. I find my inspiration for my works both in the materialization of the social world—in culture, social relationships, and the happenings of everyday life—and through the investigation of it. Reflective of my personality, the ways in which I explore and express these experiences as an artist is through two oppugnant creative processes.

When inspired by my logically driven mind, I create works that investigate the nexus between everyday life and the abstract mechanisms that shape them. Taking an academic-like approach to my process, I leverage my background in psychology, sociology, and anthropology to understand the world and people around me. Then, I transform that understanding into color, composition, and movement to produce works that are conscious, challenging, and provoking.

However, when I'm not overthinking, my affinity for the romantic side of life guides my creative endeavors. I often find inspiration in cultural experiences and the mundane happenings of everyday life. I’m keen on capturing the natural movements of people and their presence in moments—raw and full of emotion. I share the stories of people and places with the hope of connecting us to others and capturing that feeling of awe that we discover when we collide with something greater than ourselves.

Ultimately, I aspire to turn my journey of learning and exploration into visual works that create the collisions needed to empower growth–that through my works I can challenge myself and others to consider our relationships with ourselves, others, and the world around us.

I'm forever grateful for those who chose to join me on my journey of discovery and choose to support my artistic pursuits.

Always,

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Isaiah Castillo (b. 1996) is a Mexican-American multimedium artist based out of Austin, Texas. Born in Houston, he spent his early childhood in diverse inner-city neighborhoods before moving to monotonous suburbs. Exposed to stark differences in ways of life, his early socialization sparked a curiosity for learning about people, communities, cultures, and the mechanisms that shaped them. As a young adult, that curiosity turned into a passion and led him to pursue multidisciplinary studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He graduated in 2019 with a B.S. in Communication Studies, a minor in Sociology, and a Global Business Certificate from the McCombs School of Business.

Oft inspired by his passions for social science and culture, he seeks to create projects balanced between science and story. Leveraging his academic background, his process focuses on utilizing psychology, sociology, and anthropology to understand the world around him, then transforming that scientific understanding into color, composition, and movement to tell visual stories. Through design and photography, he seeks to interweave science and culture to produce works that are conscious and challenging with the hope of inspiring viewers to consider their relationships with themselves, others, and the world around them.
