Why do we step around the homeless person without giving him a second thought? Or ignore appeals to assist refugees, or victims of natural disasters?
New research offers a surprising answer: Empathizing with others takes effort, and, generally speaking, we'd rather not expend the energy.

For those of us who are constantly immersed in the realm of activism and social issues, its easy to overlook the emotional effort it takes to be involved. We often ask others to consider, learn, and empathize without considering the effort it takes to do so. In trying to persuade and motivate others, we need to keep this concept in mind, otherwise, we run the risk of pushing away those we are seeking to bring in.
